John Laudenslager: Portfolio Overview
This website is meant to give the viewer an overall perspective on my work of 6
decades in the five media that I have been most engaged in: collage, photography,
drawing, one-of-a-kind-artists’ books, and photo collage. All five media are
inextricably intertwined in my thinking and often merge together in the final result as
each approach enriches the other and gives me more opportunities for exploration.
Four main themes are always constant in my work: the natural world, especially
as it exists within the city; the urban environment, seen as a vast archeological
site that subtly reveals the life lived there; the power of fine art images seen
through their details, which are often combined with popular imagery; and finally,
there is my dogged attempt to create imaginary landscapes at this point in time,
using the many possibilities of my 5 media, often in combination.
My work since the 70s has also reflected my deep immersion in 3 vastly different
cultures: American, Japanese, and Italian. I have lived and worked or studied in all
3 countries for significant amounts of time, residing first in Philadelphia, then
Yokohama, then Bergamo and Florence, then Tokyo, and now New York. I consider
myself extremely fortunate to have experienced firsthand the contrasting artistic
languages of Asia and Europe. I am equally fortunate in having access here in New
York to the inspiration provided by the finest treasures of world art found in the city's
great museums and also by the dynamism of the city itself. I’m also enamored of the
unique beauty and power of each of the 3 countries’ expressive landscapes. All of
these influences are reflected in my work.
